Drinking in Richmond

Richmond is a funny old place, right on the disputed borderline in the fabled Melbourne battle of North v South. It's also right slap bang in the heart of this fair city's hallowed sporting grounds, with Rod Laver, AAMI and the MCG all within spitting distance.

A post-industrial zone, the majority of Richmond's drinking establishments cluster along the double helix of Bridge Road and Swan Street, intersected by Church. They say there's a pub on every corner here, and I'm pretty sure there is, with at least one in-between too.

Footy days mean huge crowds, so bear that in mind if you're after a quiet one. The Corner Hotel sitting pride of place right next to the train station is without a doubt one of Melbourne's most iconic and long-serving live music venues, right up there with the Espy and the Tote.

Here are our top tips:

The Corner Hotel - a great big beer garden up top, overlooking the city, and awesome bands playing downstairs. What moor could you want? Cheap beer and great pub grub? Done.
Holliava - part of the growing school of fancy pants bars multiplying rapidly in Richmond, Mat Mullins and crew have done a sterling job with this joint named surreally after Jack Johnson's Hawaii surf escape.

The Precinct - the heartland of the Doggies, this rather glam spot seems a bit too fancy pants for the AFL, but then again, one look at the pretty hair and fashion on the players these days says it all. Swish.

Richmond Club Hotel - great pub grub including an awesome steak, they serve up jugs of cocktails too.

Royal Saxon - a gorgeous spot with awesome Italian fare on offer, perfect for soaking up the red wine!  The Spread Eagle Hotel - worth it for hours of sniggering at the name alone.

Grandma Funks - another funny name and some cool retro action complete with Space Invaders arcade games.

Der Raum - this cocktail lover's paradise is a regular, deserved award-winner, and is a gorgeous old haunt too.

Grandma Funks

Grandmas seem to be the in thing at the moment, between Grandma Funks, a retro 60s kitsch palace of yummy grub at cheap, cheap prices, and the clubbing shenanigans of Sorry Grandma. The former is an awesomely kooky little diner in Richmond, with a mission statement that involves delivering delicious home-style Italian cooking just like nonna would. Should be renamed Nonna Funks, really. It has a very cute Happy Days vibe, with diners expecting the Fonz to arrive at any moment to rapturous applause. You can even bring you own Italian vino for $5 corkage.
